Back to School: Teach Someone

As little kids rush off to school with their shiny new backpacks and lunch pails, Men, let’s take a look at our own education. Let’s invest in a bit of self-education to raise the bar in our own lives, learning new skills, useful information, and adding value to our lives.

They say “Those who can’t do, teach.”
And I’m inclined to think that this is partially true.
But I’ve also discovered from my experience, that when I’m required to teach – whether that’s Sunday School, Graphic Design, or any of my other skills, I find that it actually helps me learn it in a new and better way.

First of all, the world is a better place when we see our responsibility to teach others the things we’ve learned. When we share our knowledge, we pass along information that could outlive us. Ancient cultures did this, passing along knowledge around community campfires, or while on the job.

There are many old skills that have been lost, because it is often assumed that people know them, rather than passed down from one generation to the next.

Truthfully, though, teaching others doesn’t just benefit the student – it benefits the teacher, by causing him to think about his skill, his information, his knowledge, and then present in a way that is easily understood.

This act of teaching then refreshes the knowledge, and helps the teacher see the information in a new way.
