We’ve been talking about the Virtues of Manhood, and this week, Josh Hatcher of Manlihood talks about the virtue of Service, and how every man should view his role as a leader through the lens of service.

  • To Serve is more noble than to dominate
  • Leadership starts with service.
  • Those that serve will reap rewards.
  • You don’t need a title to lead.
  • Kindness – The golden rule

Ultimately, we all want to be KINGS, the king of our home, the top dog at work, etc., but the truth is, KNIGHT may be a more accurate title for our role. We serve a King or a Kingdom (and we can unpack what THAT means another day) and we serve it not as a ruler, or a lord, but as a leader who lays his life on the line for those he loves.

Grit is a manly virtue that is often overlooked. Especially in a culture of instant gratification, we honestly forget the power of perseverance and resilience, and how they relate to a man achieving success.

Purpose

Knowing your WHY can help you do any WHAT or any HOW. When a man digs into his purpose, he can use that to help him push through any obstacle.

Determination

Everything starts with a decision. When that decision or determination is made, it is the start of a mindset. When a mind is truly SET on something, it can continue to accomplish anything,

Perseverance

It’s so important no to give up… not to surrender… not to quit. Perseverance is the key. It’s not easy, nor is it simply granted by fairies or empty prayers. It take practice, and when purpose and determination are set in place, it’s possible to keep striving and pushing through the hardship.

Strength of Will

Remember that strength is a muscle that we build. While there are surely some born with stronger more stubborn wills than others, most folks have to exercise to get strong. Start small, pick a few small disciplines to practice daily, or a few small and easy bad habits to break. Keep it up, and your WILL will become stronger.

Music on a Mission with Rock and Roll Patriot Dave Bray

Rock and Roll Patriot Dave Bray is a rockstar on a mission.

He’s performed on Fox and Friends, at NASCAR races, NFL games, and charted numerous singles including “Last Call” – a tribute to fallen police.

I actually had the privilege to open up as a solo performer for Dave Bray when he was touring with his band, he took the stage in our small town, and rocked the National Anthem in a way that I’d never seen before. On stage, he was a high energy ball of lightning, angry about the brokenness of our political system, hyped about the glory of the American Dream, and he yelled, jumped, and sweated full steam like a rock star should, putting on an amazing show. Off the stage, he was humble, kind, and his strength and energy were focused on listening to the veterans and new found fans who were excited to meet him and have a moment of his time, which he graciously gave to each of them.


His music and videos have been seen by millions of fans, and it’s all driven by Patriotism and Faith.

He has shared the stage with Weezer, Kansas, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, Shinedown, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as Brantley Gilbert, Hank Williams Jr, and Toby Keith.

In this interview for Manlihood.com, Dave Bray unpacks the heart of his music, talks about what America needs today, and shares his journey from the Navy to rock stardom.

As we explore the Virtues of Manhood, this week Josh Hatcher talks about COURAGE.

According to Dictionary.com

courage

[ kur-ij, kuhr– ]

noun the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery.
Obsolete. the heart as the source of emotion.

OTHER WORDS FOR COURAGE

1fearlessness, dauntlessness, intrepidity, pluck, spirit.

OPPOSITES FOR COURAGE

1cowardice.

Courage is a virtue that is often misappropriated in our current toxic culture. It’s often assigned to people who did nothing to earn it, and folks that display courage are often treated as villains. Courage is something all of as can ascribe to and attain, but it’s important to know and understand that courage is not a lack of fear, but rather the testicular fortitude to push back the fear to do the thing. (Note: Testicles are not required for courage.)

Confronting Your Darkside | Rise X Up with Louis Costa and Josh Hatcher

In 2019, Lou Costa of Ironmill partnered with Manlihood on a blog campaign entitled “Rise Up”
We wrote weekly blog posts exploring manhood, and calling men to step into more.

We shot a handful of videos to go along with our posts, but we never used them.

In June of 2021, Lou passed away unexpectedly. It was a shock to not only his biological family, but to the family he built around him as well.

After he died, I dug out the unused footage that we shot. It was raw, powerful, and I think it deserves to be a part of Lou’s Legacy.

Some day, Lou’s sons are going to Google his name. I want them to be able to see his face, to hear his voice, and see into his mind.

So these episodes are dedicated to my friend Louis James. Costa.

WARNING: Lou talks about suicide, and confronting the darkness in his own mind.

He writes out his own suicide, and writes out a sex scene.

This conversation is “bat-crap crazy” but it gets to a very meaningful point that we all need to talk about.

I’m okay with that.

There’s a hard irony to listening to Lou talk about how he might die, and the reality that death comes for all of us, knowing that his health took a sudden turn, and a brain aneurysm took his life so quickly.

Judge Joe Brown | A Man of Public Peace, Dignity and Order

Judge Joe Brown is known for his popular syndicated television show, where he served as an actual judge, passing down arbitration to criminals and offenders.

Judge Joe has since retired, but his show is still seen in syndication, and his firm but common sense opinions are currently rippling through Twitter.

In this interview with Josh Hatcher of Manlihood, Judge Joe Brown talks about what a man ought to be, the politics behind the latest sexual revolution, and he tells stories of his time on the bench.

Judge Brown’s opinions aren’t for everyone. But as a man who has served his country on the bench of justice, he’s earned the right to have his opinions… and many of those opinions make a lot more sense than the current cultural narratives of faux tolerance and division.

Judge, we appreciate you taking the time to do this interview and share your thoughts with us! You are a true gentleman, and we need more men like you in this world!
